Liam Brennan joins Greater Shankill Alternatives from Boerne, Texas, a small town located directly in the middle of the state. While originally from Texas, Liam recently finished his second year at Duke University in North Carolina, where he is pursuing a bachelors degree in Public Policy Studies with a certificate in Civic Engagement and Social Change. Liam comes to Northern Ireland as a member of DukeEngage Northern Ireland, which sends 10 students annually to Belfast to work with different community projects and partners across the city.

While at Duke, Liam is enrolled in the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps, and he will graduate from university as an officer in the United States Marine Corps, where he hopes to serve as an infantry officer. He is interested in eventually working for the State Department or the FBI to continue a career in public service. Liam explained his interest in Alternatives, “I’ve always been drawn towards a career of service, whether that is through the military or through community work, so Alternatives fits me perfectly.”

Having been in Belfast for over three weeks, Liam has spent his free time traveling Northern Ireland. So far, he has climbed Slieve Donard and visited London Derry and Omagh. After work he enjoys boxing, exercising, and exploring pubs across the city.
